Each year, Hawai`i Girl Scouts salute women who personally and professionally exemplify the values articulated in the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Not your typical awards event, the Girl Scouts of Hawai`i Woman of Distinction dinner helps to raise needed funds, while also providing hundreds of girls with a chance to see great role models in action. Hawai`i’s girls have the opportunity to interact with the honorees as well as the community leaders who attend the dinner.

The theme of our 2013 Woman of Distinction Dinner is STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). In today’s world, STEM is everywhere; almost every task and activity that we do requires some manifestation of science, technology, engineering or math. A 2012 study found that about half of all girls feel that STEM is not  a typical career path for girls. Though girls are overwhelmingly interested in STEM, 57% of them feel that if they pursued a STEM career, they would have to work harder than a man just to be taken seriously.

Our 2013 Woman of Distinction honorees have broken the gender barrier, showing that it is possible for women to pursue STEM careers–and to pursue it successfully. This year we honor three women who excel not only in their careers, but also as community leaders who inspire their colleagues and our next generation of female leaders.
