The 2013 Annual Campaign patch highlights Girl Scouts’ focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Girl Scouts is answering the nation’s call to engage more youth in STEM because STEM workers drive our nation’s innovation and competitiveness by generating new ideas, new companies and new industries. Yet today women hold about 25% of STEM positions even though the majority of college graduates are women and nearly half make up the country’s work force.

It will create more opportunities for girls to engage in STEM activities. Research shows most girls want to change the world (88%) and help people (90%) but do not see how STEM helps them achieve their aspirations. As a result they do not pursue STEM careers. Research also tells us girls’ interest in STEM increases with greater exposure to STEM fields.

It will help girls achieve academic success. Research shows that girls who gain experience in problem solving and seeking challenges in Girl Scouting are more successful in school. We also know that girls interested in STEM fields are higher achievers and better students.

While volunteers understand the importance of working with girls to encourage their interest in STEM, understandably many often feel daunted by the challenge. Donations will help bring resources to volunteers. This includes, but is not limited to designing trainings that better support the use of “It’s Your Planet, Love It!” journeys, creating STEM experiences at camps, and forging partnerships with mentors and organizations that can assist with STEM-focused program activities
.

One of Girl Scout’s greatest legacies is being a sister to every Girl Scout. Donations will also help support girls who might not participate in Girl Scouting because their family income is near or below the federal poverty level. Offering financial assistance to girls makes Girl Scouting a reality in their lives.

Congratulations to Hawai`i Girl Scout Hayley K. for winning the title of Miss Hawai`i Outstanding Teen 2013! We are certainly very proud of Hayley and excited to hear that her experience as a Girl Scout helped her achieve this accomplishment. She will continue on to represent Hawai`i in the Miss America Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando, Florida, from August 9 to 18, 2013.

Miss Hawai`i Outstanding Teen is the sister program to the Miss Hawai`i Scholarship Pageant, which falls under the Miss America system–the largest scholarship donor to women aged 17 to 24 in the world. In Hawai`i alone, the Miss Hawai`i Organization makes over one million dollars in scholarship funds available each year.

Young women between the ages of 13 and 17 years are eligible to participate in the Miss Hawai`i Outstanding Teen pageant. For two months girls must go through weekly training sessions where they learn interviewing skills, stage presence, posture, talent and presentation skills. Like the Girl Scouts, the Miss Hawai`i Outstanding Teen program is aimed at developing the “whole person” by giving young women a forum to express their personal viewpoints, talents and accomplishments. A private interview, talent and scholastic achievement are just a few of the categories evaluated during the competition.

For Hayley’s on-stage question, she was asked to explain the most important thing that the Girl Scouts has done for her. She responded by saying that the Girl Scouts has helped to shape her into the confident, independent young woman she is today:

My plan, if I should win, is to demonstrate that Girl Scouts boosts confidence, builds leadership and gives direction. Young girls will see that Miss Hawai`i’s Outstanding Teen is a Girl Scout and proud one of it! My confidence and pride of being a Girl Scout should lift spirits and encourage young girls to join. Also, showing the benefits and different correlations that the Girl Scout organization has to the Miss Outstanding Teen organization under Miss America Organization. It provides a forum for young women to express their viewpoints, talents and accomplishments. This is exactly what Girl Scouting does for every girl and really, being Miss Hawai`i’s Outstanding Teen and being a Girl Scout aren’t so different. As a community, we need to take action. As Miss Hawai`i’s Outstanding Teen I’m excited to encourage girls to be a part of this worldwide organization that many women leaders have come from. I want to change the mindset of young teens today so that we can have a better tomorrow.

Congratulations on your wonderful achievement, Hayley, and good luck in the competition in August!

May is a special time in Girl Scouting because it is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. We at Girl Scouts are proud to join all Americans in honoring the many contributions that Asians and Pacific Islanders have made to our great nation.

Indeed, Asian and Pacific Islanders have been and remain an important and vibrant part of the Girl Scout Movement from the island of Hawaii to the island of Manhattan and beyond. The term Asian-Pacific Islander encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, as well as the state of Hawaii. Just five years after Juliette Gordon Low founded our Movement in 1912, the first Girl Scout troops were organized in Hawaii. I note with a great sense of pride that the last reigning Hawaiian monarch, Queen Lili’uokalani, was an original sponsor.

The Girl Scouts of Arizona-Cactus Pine has a wonderful age-appropriate reading list for Girl Scouts interested in learning more about Asian and Pacific Islander culture, and also highlights some outstanding Asian-American women. And all over the country, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds are joining together and celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander culture. I wish everyone a wonderful Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month and hope you will join with our girls in recognizing the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched our nation’s history.
